The current national sugar stock will only be enough to cover a two and half-month consumption or until mid of March 2012, according to Andre Vincent Wenas, Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Refined Sugar Association (AGRI).

Andre was quoted by Kompas Monday as saying that the government must quickly take strategic action to resolve the minimum sugar stock and help ensure stability in the price of the commodity.

Andre quoted a January 2012 report from the Indonesian Sugar Council, that per December 15, 2011the national sugar stock totaled 667,000 tons.  With average consumption of about 220,000 tons, the stock level is only enough to cover 2.5-month consumption.  This means that stock will only be sufficient to cover consumption from January until middle of March 2012, he said.

Indonesia is Asia’s third largest importer of sugar. (rei)
