Indonesia last year exported a total of US$139 million worth of pineapple products, retaining the country as the world’s largest exporter of the horticulture commodity, said Hasanuddin Ibrahim, Director General of Horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture.

He said Monday that the main export destinations included the US, Europe, Middle East, and Latin American countries such as Peru, Panama, Uruguay, and India.

Hasanuddin said that the pineapple export was mostly in the form of processed products in cans.

“We have one private company called Great Giant Pineapple in Lampung, which exports cocktail products to various countries.  The company is now the world’s third largest exporter of cocktail products with total investment of Rp 1.4 trillion,” he said.

He added that the group now plans to set up a new company called Nusantara Tropical Fruit, which will invest in banana and guava fruits processing in Kalimantan, with planned investment of Rp 190 billion.

Hasanuddin said that growing number of corporate players have now started to eye investment in the country’s horticulture industry including state-owned PTPN XII, PTPN IX, and PTPN VII. (rei)
