Indonesia imported 2.75 million tons of rice in 2011 worth about US$1.5 billion, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
Indonesia may have a rice surplus of up to 12 million tons by 2014, if annual surplus target of 4 million tons starting this year could be realized, Minister of Agriculture Suswono said.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Rusman Heriawan recently said that the Government's Purchase Price (HPP) for rice should go up between 27 to 28 percent from the regulated HPP in 2009.
The National Logistics Agency (Bulog) has proposed to the government to increase the so-called government rice purchase price next year.
